100 x 100 Diseño en Chile, 2019

100 x 100 Diseño en Chile is a book edited by Patricio Pozo that compiles 100 iconic examples of Chilean design portraying its national identity and culture from architecture, graphic design, textile art, vernacular crafts, performance, and more. The book invited 100 designers to write an essay about one case, in which Mále co-authored an essay with architect José Quintanilla about the 'Palace of Dawn and Dusk' in Ciudad Abierta, Valparaíso. As part of the group of experimental architecture in Amereida, the palace was conceived in 1982 as an organic and open design system the was completed in collaborative stages and rounds. As a poetic space for contemplation, the palace is a result of unexpected events, a building that was never finished and found a new purpose during the process of design. The essay highlights the masterful use of bricks and minimal curved walls for the creation of a contemplative and tactile architectural space that is activated by the natural cycle of light.
