Surface Translations

Royal College of Art, London, 2018

This project was an experimental research on casting and light, exploring new encounters between the tectonic properties of material surfaces and the ephemerality of light. Through a series of pieces of 30 x 40 cm, the series translated 2D graphic patterns into 3D surfaces. By playing with colour and brightness parameters, the patterns were digitally translated into rendered 3D surfaces which were modelled with a CNC router to be casted in silicone molds and finally in plaster boards. The new translated surfaces in white plaster where activated by light, bringing back the colour information from the initial graphics into the new material objects, projecting shifting shadows and colours gradients.

One of the surfaces was casted in a series of 10 pieces to create the artwork ‘Medium Translation 1’ which is a 3-meters line of colour and shadows that create a visual optical effect.
